Installation¶
Requirements¶
| WordPress | 7.1 or later |
| PHP | 8.3 or later |
Ahoi uses features that WordPress only has from version 7.1. With an older version of WordPress or PHP, WordPress does not let you activate the theme.
Installing Ahoi¶
- In the admin, open Appearance → Themes and click Add Theme at the top.
- Search for "Ahoi".
- Click Install for Ahoi, then Activate.
If you have Ahoi as a ZIP file, click Upload Theme under Appearance → Themes → Add Theme, choose the file and activate it.
Updates arrive like for any theme, under Dashboard → Updates.
After activating¶
Header and footer are in place right away. On the dashboard and under Appearance → Themes, Ahoi offers to create the home page (Home page with one click); with wpShopGermany, the header also gets a main menu with the product categories. If there is still no menu after that, create it first.
First the menu¶
Without a menu of your own, the header shows all pages
As long as there is no menu, WordPress creates one itself the first time the site is visited, and saves it. It contains a Page List: all published pages, and every new page is added automatically. With wpShopGermany up to 4.6 this includes pages such as "Passwort gesendet" or "Zahlung erfolgreich" that do not belong in the menu. From wpShopGermany 4.7.0 such pages are left out of the Page List, as are the legal pages linked in the footer (With wpShopGermany).
If a classic menu from a previous theme already exists, WordPress uses that one instead.
- Under Appearance → Editor → Patterns, section Template Parts, open the Header and click the Navigation block.
- If it contains the Page List: click Edit in the toolbar and confirm with Edit in the Edit Page List dialog. After that, every page is an item of its own, and new pages are no longer added automatically.
- Delete items that do not belong in the menu, add missing ones, set the order and save.
Later you can also edit the menu under Appearance → Editor → Navigation. If it has many items, see the tip under Header and footer.
Then¶
- Home page: Until you publish a home page, WordPress shows your latest posts (Setting up the home page).
- Footer: With wpShopGermany, it shows the address and email from the shop data. Social icons appear as soon as you give them an address (Header and footer).
- Site title and logo: Ahoi shows the site title from Settings → General in the header. The header already contains a "Site Logo" block, which stays empty until you set a logo: select it in the header in the Site Editor and choose an image, or set a logo under Appearance → Editor → Identity.
Language¶
Ahoi comes with a German translation. If the site language under Settings → General is German, the texts of Ahoi appear in German too.
If translate.wordpress.org has a language pack for Ahoi, WordPress downloads it with the translation updates and uses it instead of the bundled translation.
Child theme¶
If you need your own files that an update must not overwrite, create a child theme. For colors, fonts and templates you do not need one: whatever you save in the Site Editor stays in place when Ahoi is updated.
