Accessibility

Ahoi is submitted to the wordpress.org directory with the "accessibility-ready" tag. The theme is built to the requirements of the WordPress Themes Team, which are based on WCAG 2.2 AA, and tested against them, in light and dark, with and without wpShopGermany. Whether wordpress.org grants the tag is decided by the Themes Team in its review.

What Ahoi provides

  • Skip link: The first tab stop of every page jumps straight to the content.
  • Keyboard: Menu, navigation overlay, search, light/dark toggle and expandable questions can be used with the keyboard. The focus is always visible.
  • Contrast: Text, links, buttons and field borders reach the values of WCAG 2.2 AA in all ten palettes, light and dark.
  • Links in text are underlined.
  • Headings: Each template has exactly one main heading.
  • Landmarks: Header, content and footer are marked up, menus and search have names of their own.
  • Zoom: Pages stay readable from a width of 320 px without horizontal scrolling, also with larger text and line spacing. Long words and web addresses wrap.
  • Motion: Ahoi has no animations of its own.

The accessibility statement comes with the theme as accessibility.txt.

What you take care of yourself

The theme can only do its part. For your content:

  • Alternative text: Every image that conveys something needs an alternative text. Purely decorative images get an empty one.
  • Your own colors: Ahoi uses your colors unchanged. Check the contrast (Your own colors).
  • Do not use the "(dark)" fields as a color for blocks; they are too pale on a light background.
  • Buttons from patterns need a link, otherwise they cannot be reached with the keyboard.
  • Headings in order: an H3 below an H2, not straight to an H4.
  • Link texts say where the link leads. "Click here" or "More" alone is not enough.

Known limits

  • Expandable questions: So that the page does not jump while loading, Ahoi hides the closed answers of the "Accordion" block before the WordPress script runs. If that script fails, the closed answers cannot be opened. Without JavaScript, all answers are visible.
  • Plugins: Ahoi does not check what plugins output. For wpShopGermany, the shop pages were tested together with Ahoi.
